L E Smith | Interrelation

  • West Norwood Library and Picturehouse 1-7 Norwood High Street London, England, SE27 9JU United Kingdom (map)

L E Smith is a multidisciplinary artist working in digital photography, painting and sculpture. Born in south-east London to creative parents, Smith’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in themes of human connection, identity and self-relationship. Their work examines the fluid and often intricate interplay between the self and others, exploring the emotional landscapes of intimacy, vulnerability and transformation.

With over 12 years of experience as an artists’ model, Smith has developed a profound understanding of form, presence and the unspoken narratives that bodies convey. This background informs their approach to art-making, where physicality and emotion merge to challenge conventional perceptions of selfhood and connection. Their work often deconstructs and reconstructs the body - figuratively and conceptually - inviting viewers to question their own relationships with identity, gender and interpersonal bonds.

Interrelation is an exploration of the fluid, often complex connections that define us - our relationships with our bodies, our parents, our partners and the shifting landscapes of identity, capturing the vulnerabilities and strengths embedded in human form and presence. Smith invites viewers into a deeply personal yet universal dialogue on gender fluidity, intimacy and self-awareness.

This exhibition also deconstructs and reimagines the ways we relate to ourselves and others, asking: How do we see ourselves through the eyes of those closest to us? How do our physical forms become sites of memory, tension and transformation?

By intertwining personal narrative with broader human themes, Interrelation offers a space for reflection, connection, and the redefinition of intimacy in all its forms.
